1.3.4.a Filtration

Three Basic Dry Filter System Types

There are three basic types of dry filter systems available. Each has advantages and disadvantages. The types are

1 - Baffle Type

2 - Strainer Type

3 - Combination Baffle / Strainer or Strainer / Strainer

1.3.4.b Filtration

Baffle

A baffle type redirects airflow with offset holes in the media, which could be paper, metal, or styrofoam. Heavier overspray cannot change direction quickly enough, resulting in paint collecting on the media. Cardboard baffle type and light density Styrofoam filters are also available; however, dry baffle exhaust systems have almost entirely disappeared, except when used with paint filters as pre-baffles. A single or double row of baffles is placed vertically in front of a normal paint arrestor bank. This provides the primary collection surface for overspray and effectively protects the filters from rapid loading. However, they now become part of the collection system and must be cleaned and maintained. This application originated with the collection of high solids paints that caused heavy loading and forced rapid change of filter media. The physical characteristics of the high solids material allow collection through a trough at the base of the baffles. In some cases, this reclaimed material is reusable or returnable to the manufacturer.

There are several versions of baffle type filters:

Metal

Expanded Kraft

1.3.4.c Filtration

Strainer Type

Strainer types simply block overspray from passing with the air stream. This is sometimes enhanced with an adhesive material coated on the fibers. Particles that are smaller than this screen of material will pass through.
There are a couple of basic types of strainer media. They are:

Non-Woven Fibers:

Efficiency = Excellent

Holding

Capacity = Poor

Fiberglass:

Efficiency = Fair

Holding

Capacity = Fair

1.3.4.d Filtration

Combination Type

A configuration of two separate filters, one behind the other, provides excellent filtration efficiency and holding capacity capability. Initially, this system is more costly but eliminates maintenance issues associated with others over time. The best system combination would be a combination baffle/strainer as the primary and an efficient pocket or bag filter as the secondary. This would provide a 99-99.5% system efficiency with excellent holding capacity.There are several types of combination filter media available. They are:

High loft, multi-ply, non-woven polyester:

Efficiency = Excellent

Holding

Capacity = Excellent

Expanded Kraft paper with a non-woven backing:

Efficiency = Good to Excellent

Holding

Capacity = Excellent

Fiberglass with a non-woven backing:

Efficiency = Excellent

Holding

Capacity = Poor
